The “quantum” exhibition: Communicating quantum physics through demonstrators and staging activities

Abstract

In recent years, the rapid development of quantum technologies and the increasing research activity in quantum science have prompted a growing number of dissemination initiatives aimed at enhancing public understanding of quantum physics (QP). Within the framework of the Italian Quantum Weeks project, we have developed, over the past four years, an exhibition that introduces visitors to fundamental concepts of QP through visual analogies, purpose-built hands-on demonstrators, and interactive staging activities. In this paper, we focus on the design, implementation, and educational use of two of these demonstrators, namely the quantum-dice and the quantum-cards. We also present preliminary visitor feedback, indicating that these low-tech interactive demonstrator materials can effectively engage a general audience, stimulate curiosity, and foster an understanding of abstract quantum concepts without requiring prior background knowledge.
