Abstract

Engaging teachers in teacher professional learning communities (PLCs) is an effective approach to professional development. PLCs influence teaching practices and provide an ideal environment for supporting and motivating teachers to implement changes – adopting transformative pedagogy for content delivery and preparing future citizens for a multicultural society. Teachers’ professional development plays a key role for enhancing students’ motivation and improving their performance. This paper describes the impact of teachers’ participation in PLC on students’ interest and attitudes to science in Georgia. It uses a multi-method design approach. The findings reveal that involvement in teacher PLCs foster positive attitudes toward science and science classes and enhances students’ interest. Furthermore, teachers from PLC report an innovative and collaborative training experience, which they translated into innovative teaching methods for their students.
